Castrovalva have been nurturing their Ghetto hard rock into something as unique, as it is powerful. To precede the release of their full length we have a brand new exclusive which doesn’t appear on the album.

After a brilliant 09 which saw the trio tackle support slots with Israeli noise merchants Monotonix, Health & An Albatross, the band have been locked in the studio perfecting their sound for their first full length LP We Are A Unit, set to drop on the 12th April this year along with a full UK & European tour. Stay tuned for 2010 for upcoming dates with Sheffields fearless Rolo Tomassi!

Don’t just take our northern praise coming from our cakeholes, check out what these fine people have to say:

“Weirdo rock from a leeds duo taking a cue or two from fellow townsfolk That Fucking Tank but twisting a formula of exuberant brutality with neat proggy-toned sidesteps, this mini album is a headfuck like few others on these pages, impressively subversive.” – Rocksound Magazine

“You can imagine their live shows to be a tangle of noise and righteous poses” – Rock a Rolla Magazine

“Bass pumps through amps set to levels that make the soundman’s eyes roll and the drums are given the kind of beating that yer regular punch
up victim can’t relate to.” – PlanB Magazine

These Monsters – Rocksound / Artrocker features February 2010

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Russian Circles, Earthless & Khuda – Brudenell, Leeds – Friday 9th April 2010

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Simply, Russian Circles is a three piece instrumental band from Chicago. It would be tough to imagine that a band would be able to develop its own unique presence and innovation with such solid groundwork in the instrumental genre.

However, Russian Circles does bring something new to the table. Their songs feel incredibly narrative and linear. There is no angular flash or mathematical flair. These songs stream through themes and by no means build on just one repeating idea. They are gargantuan in scope. They flow seamlessly from beautiful soft ambience to truly defined melody to massively thick heaviness with a gradual progression that never leaves you lost. Variety is no gimmick and they are a band that does not just vacillate within an achieved sonic identity.

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

Morning!

The long awaited debut album from These Monsters ‘Call Me Dragon’ will officially be release on the 1st March in the UK and 10th May throughout Europe. Recorded at Foel Studios, Wales with Chris Fielding (Electric Wizard, The Klaxons, Napalm Death) the album demonstrates the freaked out, riff driven prog-force that the respected four-piece have become. With their love of large vintage amplifiers, big drums and high energy, passionate performances, These Monsters deliver a huge live sound and are developing a reputation as one of the loudest and most exciting underground bands in the UK. This is also our tenth release & our first collaboration between ourselves & Function Records !

So far These Monsters have impressed whilst supporting bands such as Russian Circles, These Arms Are Snakes, Oceansize, 65 Days of Static, Mono, Envy, Health, The Whip, Foals, Youthmovies, ilikeTrains, Broken Records and The Fall. Sets at Leeds/Reading Festivals in 2008 and ZXZW in Holland saw These Monsters take to bigger stages. The band also played a mammoth 70-minute set at this years EXIT Festival in Serbia.

The band have recently finished filming a music video for the album title track ‘Call Me Dragon’. Written, produced and directed by drummer Tommy Davidson, with Adam Conlon taking on cinematography duties (Funeral for a Friend, Gallows, Fightstar, and Grammatics). These Monsters will then begin a huge tour across the UK and Europe probably lasting til next year! For more information about dates please visit the bands myspace.

“This Leeds quatet will kick off 2010 with shitloads of idiosyncratic style. Creating largely instrumental, frequently cacophonous and consistently transfixing songs, they rock like proper nutjobs in a manner that’s wilfully experimental but never pretentious. Their growing reputation for putting on one hell of a live show is richly deserved, too” Rocksound one’s to watch – December 2009

“One of the most interesting and engaging acts I’ve heard from the UK in a long fucking time – no word of a lie.” Collective-zine

“Time has frozen as witnesses halt in their tracks, intoxicated by the heady miasma of post-rock resonance. Both comforting and devastating.” The Fly Magazine

Mono come to leeds!

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

On Thursday 18th March 2010 the fantastic MONO will be coming to Leeds.

Just in time for their 10-year anniversary, MONO return with their fifth studio album, the absolutely massive Hymn To The Immortal Wind.

After touring almost non-stop for five years, the band hibernated for over a year to focus solely on writing Hymn. The result is their most thoughtful and eclectic album to date. Written and arranged with a hopeful, romantic narrative in mind, the songs string together like chapters in an epic love story. The music is naturally majestic, with MONO’s trademark wall of noise crashing beautifully against the largest chamber orchestra the band has ever enlisted. The instrumentation is vast, incorporating strings, flutes, organ, piano, glockenspiel and tympani into their standard face-melting set-up.

Recorded to analog tape with long-time friend and producer Steve Albini, there is an intimacy captured here that is at once beautiful and a little terrifying. The creaking of old wooden chairs as the orchestra rocks in their seats (both literally and figuratively), puckered lips rolling along flutes, and even the conductor’s opening cue can be heard during the hauntingly quiet opening moments

While Hymn continues to mine the cinematic drama inherent in all of MONO’s music, the dynamic shifts now come more from dark-to-light instead of quiet-to-loud. The maturity to balance these elements so masterfully has become MONO’s strongest virtue.
