After 6 years and 27 releases Leeds noise/prog/rock label Brew have decided to call it a day. Currently home to Kong, Humanfly, Blacklisters, Castrovalva and Nine Black Alps, Brew had also previously released record by the likes of Hawk Eyes, These Monsters, Shield Your Eyes and That Fucking Tank.

Below are some words from us that can also be viewed via our friends over at The Quietus: http://thequietus.com/articles/12288-brew-leeds-record-label-set-to-close

‘We’ve had the pleasure of releasing some incredible records over the years and have been fortunate to work with so many amazing people. We’d like to thank everyone that has ever supported us, bought a record or a t-shirt and spread our music in general. Humanfly’s ‘Awesome Science’ is our final release and we couldn’t think of a better record to go out on which sums up what we love about physical records both musically and aesthetically. The label will still remain active for a while as we wind things down and continue to take and fulfil orders.

To celebrate/commiserate we are currently running a big sale on our store where every CD/vinyl/shirt/poster (except the new Humanfly album) is now reduced in price. For the next 2 weeks all our releases are set to ‘pay what you like’ on bandcamp too so feel free to explore our back catalog and if you feel like paying some money we won’t complain’. http://brew.bandcamp.com

Thank you so much to our family & friends for your continued support. We are so thankful, there is a far too many people to list, you know who you are.

T-shirt design by the ever talented Tommy Davidson

Humanfly’s previous 3 albums saw them gradually edge away from their original fast, hardcore, DIY punk sound through to post-metal, now taking them to their current form which in the case of new album ‘Awesome Science’ is a massive prog beast.

There’s been a shift in dynamics which may come as a surprise to many who were used to the ‘quiet > loud > even louder’ formula that worked so well. ‘Awesome Science’ is very much and in every sense, shape and form a prog album.

Humanfly have crafted an astonishing record that moves, shifts and at certain moments elevates the listener leaving them gobsmacked by the sheer musicianship on display. Think King Crimson meets The Mars Volta and you are almost there.

To support the release the band will take to the road opening for the legendary Cult of Luna on the UK leg of their European tour. With further tours planned for April onwards, 2013 is shaping up to Humanfly’s best year yet.

The term ‘unique’ is often thrown around but in 2010 when Castrovalva’s eagerly awaited début album ‘We are A Unit’ was unleashed on an unsuspecting world they really did intrigue, confuse, excite and at times disturb listeners.

Their huge and harsh bass driven-rock sound coupled with pop overtones, a hip-hop inspired album concept and one of the highest pitched voices in the UK rock scene had writers reaching out all over the place to try and find suitable comparisons. Acts such as Hella, Death from Above 1979, Lightning Bolt, N.W.A, Notorious B.I.G and even Prince were all mentioned in reviews with the likes of NME, Artrocker, Rock A Rolla, Rock Sound and Drowned in Sound heaping praise on the album.

Since then Castrovalva have kept their musical cards very close to their chest leaving many wondering what direction they’d take yet. There were brief glimpses in 2011 when new tracks featured on a split 10” between Dance to the Radio and Brew alongside Hawk Eyes, Blacklisters and Dolphins and further split with Kong, Shield Your Eyes and That F*cking Tank.

The band ended the year playing the BBC Introducing Stage at Leeds & Reading Festival where BBC Rock Show’s Daniel P Carter tipped them as one of 5 bands to watch alongside Deftones, Bring Me The Horizon, Jimmy Eat World and Weezer.
Now at this point in 2012 Castrovalva are back with their new album ‘You’re not in Hell, You’re in Purgatory My Friend’ set for release through Leeds label Brew (Nine Black Alps, Kong, Blacklisters, Humanfly) on 1st October. As with everything associated with this band the only thing you can ever expect is the unexpected.

This time the flirtations with hip-hop are gone and replaced with ideas and themes focused on things closer to home where the subjects of friends, family, fatherhood and broken relationships are all explored. But while lyrically at times this may be a far more serious record the fun and excitement is still very much there with blaring synths at the forefront alongside those crushing but addictive bass-lines.

All this becomes ever so apparent when you listen to the double AA singles ‘Señorita’ and ‘I am the Golden Widow’ (released digitally on 16th September). Over just two tracks Castrovalva clock up a record number of influences jumping between rock, dance, noise, metal and even Motown for a brief moment.

In the past they have shared the stage with the likes of Health, Adebisi Shank, An Albatross, Pulled Apart By Horses, Tek One, &U&I and Melt Banana to name a few. Now in October they will hit the road as main support with label mates Nine Black Alps where they will no doubt confuse and delight people in equal measure.

Hello. So as you may know we’ve had some on going issues with the Blacklisters vinyl. After months of being assured that they were on there way and numerous delivery dates where the records didn’t show we have now cancelled the order with this company. An order has now been placed with another company, artwork and proofs have been approved and we expect delivery within the next 3 to 4 weeks.

We can only apologize again for such a long delay. We have been let down massively by this company which was recommended to us and won’t be using them ever again. This has never happened to us before and we’re still trying to understand what the original company have actually been doing all this time. Anyway…

We’d like to thank you all for being so patient so far. However if you would like a refund at this stage then please let us know though if you’ve come this far then you might as well hang on a bit longer..

And again if you’ve ordered the vinyl and want a download code to the Blacklisters album you ordered then please email info@brewrecords.net

Thanks again for your patience.

It is with great pleasure we announce Nine Black Alps are to return in 2012 with an October UK tour and their fourth studio album ‘Sirens’ set for release on 7th October (digitally) and 8th October (LP/CD) through Brew.

The band were formed in 2003 in Manchester, UK and were quickly signed by Island Records after just a handful of local shows and an almighty scramble amongst the music industry.

After a debut single ‘Cosmopolitan’, Nine Black Alps spent 2004 touring the UK before travelling to Los Angeles to record their debut album ‘Everything Is’ with Rob Schnapf. The success of the album led them to play several large tours in the UK, US, Europe and Japan.

After spending the majority of 2006 touring America, the band recorded their second album ‘Love/Hate’ with Dave Sardy before touring with the likes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Biffy Clyro.

In 2009, Nine Black Alps regrouped to record their third album ‘Locked Out From The Inside’ with Dave Eringa which saw them producing their heaviest work to date.

Following a UK headline tour in October 2009, the band took time out to pursue other projects with Sam Forrest releasing a string of solo albums, David Jones playing live session guitar for The Cribs and Martin Cohen leaving to form his own band Milkmaid.

Nine Black Alps regrouped in Spring 2011 to record their fourth album ‘Sirens’. The album was entirely self-produced and mixed by the band in Yorkshire and offers the clearest vision of Nine Black Alps yet.

‘Sirens’ is the sound of a band that has grown and matured but still contains all the hallmarks of a classicNine Black Alps record which saw the likes of the NME hail their music as, ‘a fantasy fairyland of college rock and surf-pop’ while Kerrang nominated them for the ‘Best New band award’ in 2005.

To coincide with the release of the album, Nine Black Alps will embark on their first UK tour in almost 3 years. Tickets as well as album pre-orders and bundles are on sale now via
